Ryan, as this Associated Press story makes clear, is no neophyte to newspapers or free newspapers. Of note was the fact that he oversaw the profitable RedEye free daily in Chicago for the Tribune Co., which owns the Baltimore Sun and the free daily amNewYork. Of course whether he is allowed to expand depends a lot on the fate of the Tribune Co., which is under pressure from shareholders to increase its profitability.
